Scholarship Programs

Northwest Rural EMS supports educational activities with the
John Hassell Memorial Scholarship; two $500 scholarships are
presented annually to graduating seniors from Tomball High
School majoring in a Health Care Field.
This scholarship is in memory of a long time member of
Northwest Rural EMS who died from cancer several years ago,
John Hassell. During his tenure, John served as Operations
Officer on several occasions, and in 1992, he took over as
Executive Director after the resignation of the previous
director. John's leadership was invaluable during the
transition period of these years. He was diagnosed with
cancer in 1993 and after a lengthy battle, died in 1994. John
was an EMT- Intermediate for several years and was enrolled in
a paramedic completer class at the time of his diagnosis. The
Texas Department of Health awarded John an honorary
certification of Paramedic prior to his death.
Our scholarship was created in 1994 and was presented by
John’s wife, Pat, in 1995 to a Tomball High School graduating
senior entering the Health Care field in college. The
scholarships are awarded in the amounts of $500 each to
individuals from Tomball High School going into the healthcare
field.
